Mandela Day has become one of our favourite days in the Londolozi calendar. Each year it offers us something far greater than an opportunity to complete a project or contribute 67 minutes of service. It invites us to pause together as a village. To reconnect with the values that have shaped this place, and to […]

There is a story Jean Giono wrote in 1953, about a shepherd named Elzéard Bouffier who lived alone in a barren stretch of Provence. Each evening Bouffier sorted acorns by lamplight, keeping only the perfect ones, discarding the cracked and the small. Each day he walked the dead hills and planted them, a hundred at […]

Twenty-seven April 1994. For South Africa, it was the day the door swung open. Freedom Day marks the first democratic elections in this country’s history, a turning point that still echoes through every generation that followed. It is a day not just for remembering what was won, but for asking: what have we built with […]

The response from our Londolozi family was heartwarming, and I am absolutely […]

A Story of Sacred Trees, Shared Wisdom, and Sustainable Futures For as long as Londolozi has existed, the marula tree has stood as a quiet sentinel – its wide, welcoming canopy a witness to laughter, tears, decisions, and dreams. It is said that at Londolozi, all problems are solved beneath a marula tree. Here, in […]

Where the airwaves meet education and young leaders rise to change their communities

In the heart of rural Mpumalanga, something extraordinary is happening. Young voices are breaking through the static, not just on radio waves, but in classrooms, communities, and leadership roles across the region. This is the work of the Good Work Foundation (GWF) – an organisation that believes the future of South Africa lies not in distant boardrooms, but in the hands of the youth they're empowering today.

Picture this: a young student steps into a radio studio, headphones on, microphone ready. But this isn't just any radio show – this is BlueHazy FM, where learning literally meets the airwaves. Born from the vision of a GWF graduate, this community-powered radio station is redefining what education can look like in rural South Africa.

"Being on air helped me grow my confidence and find my voice. I never imagined I'd be sharing what I learnt with the whole community!" – Tebogo, ICT Academy student

BlueHazy FM isn't your average radio station. Here, students interview students, creating authentic peer-to-peer learning that resonates with young listeners. Grade 3 learners read short stories live on air through the "Reading with OLA" programme, building confidence while inspiring other children to pick up books. Real-time educational segments bring GWF's Career Academy lessons directly to community members who can't physically attend classes, extending the reach of quality education beyond physical boundaries. With 36+ educational broadcasts each month, the station connects multiple campuses across Mpumalanga and the Free State, creating a network of learning that spans communities.

The station operates on a 100% youth-presenter model, meaning every voice you hear belongs to a young person discovering their potential. From IT hours that enhance digital skills to weekly farming discussions with expert guests, BlueHazy FM has become the beating heart of community learning.

But here's what makes it truly special: this isn't just about broadcasting – it's about amplifying voices that might otherwise go unheard. When a young person steps behind that microphone, they're not just sharing information; they're claiming their space as a leader, a teacher, and a changemaker.

While BlueHazy FM gives young people a platform to speak, GWF's Young Leaders Course ensures they have something meaningful to say. Launched in 2024, this transformative 10-month programme is building the next generation of leaders who will shape not just GWF's future, but the future of their entire region.
The course weaves together five powerful themes:

What sets this programme apart is its grounding in the GWF leadership model – developed by co-founder Gogo Mo and guided by decades of experience in rural education and community development. Participants don't just read about leadership; they live it through:
"We've put together plans for the next three months to showcase the amazing work happening at GWF... It's about capturing learning in real-time and sharing it with the community." – Fumani Mathumbu, Special Projects Lead

Here's the beautiful thing about GWF's approach: it creates ripples that extend far beyond any single programme. A young person who gains confidence presenting on BlueHazy FM becomes a more effective leader in the Young Leaders Course. A graduate of the leadership programme returns to their community with skills to start local initiatives. A student who learns digital skills through radio programming becomes the IT support for their entire village.
This is education as ecosystem – where every element strengthens the others, and where rural youth aren't just prepared for opportunities that might come their way, but empowered to create opportunities themselves.

To sustain and grow these life-changing programmes, GWF needs our support. BlueHazy FM requires R 404 508 for 2025 to cover:

This isn't just about funding a radio station – it's about investing in a launchpad for young talent, a toolkit for rural education, and a window into South Africa's future.
When you support GWF, you're not just making a donation. You're amplifying voices that deserve to be heard, building leaders who will transform their communities, and creating platforms where rural youth can showcase their potential. Most importantly, you're investing in a legacy that will ripple through generations, ensuring that today's empowered young people become tomorrow's community changemakers.

In a world where rural youth are often overlooked, the Good Work Foundation is turning up the volume on their potential. Through BlueHazy FM and the Young Leaders Course, they're proving that the future of South Africa isn't something that happens to rural communities – it's something that emerges from them.
The airwaves are ready. The leaders are rising. Now it's time to tune in and support the frequency of change.
